Lake Michigan Hunter Sailing Association - Forum

I've sailed a lot on the West coast and in the Caribbean, but never in any of the Great Lakes. I would like to know what a great day-sail trip would be? In San Diego, we sail out to the Coronado islands (about 22 miles out) and back in a day. We sail out, drop the hook for lunch, then sail back so we arrive by 1700 before the fog rolls in. I'm hoping others will join this group shortly, to give you a better idea of what seasoned Lake Michigan sailors do for a day-sail. We sail out of Racine and I know it's popular to sail up to Milwaukee or down to Kenosha (depending on the prevailings) to grab a bite to eat. Some folks get an early start and head for the mid-lake buoy and then head back. Kurt & I tend to get too late a start for that and just tool around the Racine lakefront and cocktail back at the slip! Cathy

What is the sailing distance to Milwaukee? I've also heard about Beaver Island; I know that isn't a day sail destination, but what's the distance?
