I'm having problems with the USPS MMSI registration. Application states that a call sign is mandatory. As a recreational boater, I use my boat name, the application does not recognize this. Is there a work-around?

Hi Linton,

Your call sign is something you obtain when you get your Ships Radio License, and will look something like "ABC 1234." Here is a link that will give you all the information you need to obtain the license: www.wireless.fcc.gov/services/index.htm?job=licensing&id=ship_stations. You need to have the radio license before you get your MMSI and the radio license will contain your call sign.

When using your radio, you can use your boat name as your "handle," but your call sign comes with the Ships Station Radio License.

The MMSI number available through the USPS web site is intended for domestic vessels who do not wish to register through the FCC, and as such should not be 'requiring' a call-sign. You might try leaving it blank and see if that works. Else, this is executed through the Education department, perhaps contacting Gene Danko (See top of http://www.usps.org/eddept/me/main.htm for contact link) and see if you can get help that way. If you do go ahead and register your radio with the FCC, per the above link, then you can - and should - get your MMSI number through the FCC. However, if you are a boat is a "non-compulsory" vessels (ala recreational vessel that will not be leaving US waters) the USPS MMSI approach will be an effective and no cost. Al Thomason, SN USPS

I had absolutly no problems receiving MMSI without an FCC lisc. as they are not needed within the US waters for recreational purposes. I got mine thru the Boat US web pages before USPS started offering the process. You can still get them from Boat US.
