July 31, 2012: NEWPORT, RI - The 2012 Melges 32 World Championship, hosted by the New York Yacht Club will take place on September 20-29 in Newport, RI, where already, twenty-four entries have registered to compete. More than 30-plus teams are expected to attend, potentially breaking the class' previous record of 32 set in San Francisco, California in 2010.
With the completion of the 2012 New York Yacht Club Race Week at Newport presented by Rolexregatta and the U.S. National Championship just this past weekend, Melges 32 teams worldwide are shifting into high-gear as they prepare for fierce competition starting now and continuing through until the end of September. Some of the world's greatest teams will assemble for Worlds. From Vincenzo Onorato's Mascalzone Latino to John Kilroy's Samba Pa Ti, from newly crowned 2012 National Champion Jason Carroll onArgo to Ryan DeVos on Volpe, high performance yacht racing lovers will be in for a real speed treat this coming fall. Reigning World Champion William Douglas on Goombay Smash will return in an attempt to defend his title, while 2009 World Champion Pieter Taselaar on Bliksem strives to reclaim victory.
ENTRY DEADLINE APPROACHING, AUGUST 10
The official entry deadline to enter the 2012 Melges 32 World Championship is August 10. Any team that plans to race that has not yet registered is encouraged to do so now, by registering online at the Official Championship Event Website.
