You're at the launch ramp getting ready for a day on the water with friends. BoatUS Magazine's senior editor Rich Armstrong teaches you how to put your boat in the water with help. He explains what each person should do and how to safely back up the the boat trailer, unhook the boat from the trailer, and get it to the dock. Install lines on cleats, replace the drain plug, remove the transom tie-downs. Unplug trailer lights, loosen safety chain. Signal to the driver, release winch line and bow eye, secure the boat to the dock. Finally, walk the boat to the end of the dock while the driver parks the truck and trailer.

BoatUS Magazine associate editor Mark Corke walks you through the steps necessary to replace a broken bilge pump switch on your boat. A boat's float switch turns on when there's enough water in the bilge to float it, and then it shuts off the pump once the water is pumped out. A broken bilge pump float switch could cause the boat to sink. Mark will show you how to test whether it's working, how to remove the one that doesn't work, and then reconnect a new switch using marine-appropriate electrical connections. This is a fairly straightforward project that you can do in an hour or so for minimal cost.

Upgrading from a traditional stuffing box, or shaft seal, to a more modern dripless type will keep the bilge of your boat dry and odor-free. You'll start by removing the coupling from the shaft from the transmission, then remove the old stuffing box. You'll clean up the shaft, install the new rotor and bellows, reattach the shaft to the transmission, and reinstall the ground wire. Then you'll lock the rotor onto the shaft using set screws. It’s a fairly complicated DIY project, but if you have a day or two to spare it could be a worthwhile investment. Join BoatUS Associate editor Mark Corke as he walks you through all the steps from start to finish.
