August 18, 2009: SAN FRANCISCO, CA - - The following is an excerpt from and interview with BMW ORACLE Racing's Chief Designer Thomas Hahn. Designing for this edition of the America's Cup must be a designer and engineer's dream - - you almost have a blank canvas. How to you approach such and open design brief?
Thomas Hahn: I always thought that coming in to the America's Cup last time was engineering heaven but what we have today is unbelievable. It's great!
In our team, we had a few advantages however that made life easier. First, the help of our French multihull specialists who have tremendous experience in structures, in sailing . . . whatever it was, these guys had the expertise. Second, our engineering tools, as they were coming from the auto industry, we had already adapted them to the nautical environment in 2003 and we were able to use them. Third, our experience in terms of structures, helped us make pretty good decisions. So that helped us challenge this major engineering project.
